Tofino: road trip with a foodie and two toddlers was by far my favourite family vacation to date! I don’t often share our family adventures on the blog, however this trip was on point and I can’t resist. Tofino was a dream weekend getaway filled with delicious foodie finds!
This was by far my favourite family vacation to date! I don’t often share our family adventures on the blog, however this trip was on point and I can’t resist.
After weeks of research to find accommodations in Tofino that met our 2 bedroom and full kitchen requirements I struck gold! On VRBO.com I found a perfect 2 bedroom cottage a block from Chesterman’s Beach.
My requirement for a kitchen when we travel is pretty simple, I make most (about 85-90%) of our and our twin girl’s food. Not having a kitchen for 4 days would be rough. Not to mention that after more than two meals out I start to feel unhealthy, I’m weird like that. And, having a kitchen allowed to make a treat of a local meal. Fresh live crabs, fresh bread from the new coffee roasters in town, and local beer for my hubby was one special dinner. We rocked date night in! My girls gobbled up the leftover crab the next day for lunch.
We got take out one night from Wildside Grill; it was awesome. Delicious pulled pork with slaw, juicy and zesty fish tacos, the fries were amazing. My only piece of advice is do what the locals do; call your order in ahead of time. We waited in line for quite some time while the locals picked up their large orders. It’s a popular joint.
Favourite coffee was Tofitian Coffee at Live to Surf. A perfect latte! There’s also Tofino Coffee Roasting Company in town. This is also where I picked up the fresh made bread for our crab feast. They have loaves made from the local brewery beer which is moist and airy making it a great pairing for a seafood feast.
Live Crab. You can’t miss it. It’s across from the Co-op gas station on the main drag as you’re heading into town. Each large crab is $15, or $12 if you’re willing to take one with a missing claw. Just don’t be like us and try to boil a gigantic pot of water on the side burner of the BBQ; I aged a lot in this timeframe.
Our one lunch out was at Sobo. The description on the menu is accurate, “killer fish tacos”. My girls also shared the kids version of the fish taco with great glee. I can’t say enough about the polenta fries and here’s a pro-tip for you: I usually order extra so I can get a few to go and have them with eggs the next morning. Sobo is extremely baby/kid friendly with loads of highchairs and booster seats. It gets extremely busy so go early or be prepared to wait.
The go to local brewery is Tofino Brewing Company. It’s just off the main drag in an industrial portion of town. They have a great tasting room. My hubby picked up a growler of the Blonde Ale to enjoy over our stay there. Unfortunately, no beer for this pregnant lady.
Where I so wish we had had an opportunity to eat at: the Wolf in the Fog. Our previous favourite restaurant, the Spotted Bear had closed down. This is most definitely on our list for next time! Let me know if you’ve been and your thoughts on it.
I hope you all get to enjoy Tofino one day … with satisfied and full tummies of course! If you’ve already been please share your favourite spots so we can try something new next time.
Enjoy!
